What Makes SL28 Kenyan Coffee So Special?

Fresh SL28 coffee cherries on the vine

"SL28 isn't just a coffee variety—it's a legacy. Born in 1935 from a single tree in Kenya, this variety has become the gold standard for blackcurrant-forward, wine-like coffees worldwide."

The Origins of SL28

In the 1930s, Scott Laboratories (hence "SL") was tasked with developing coffee varieties that could thrive in Kenya's unique high-altitude environments. After extensive trials, a single tree from the Tanganyika Drought Resistant variety was selected. This tree produced cherries with extraordinary flavor potential, and from it, SL28 was born.

The Flavor Profile: Blackcurrant & Beyond

What sets SL28 apart is its remarkably distinct flavor profile. When grown at high altitudes with adequate rainfall, SL28 produces a cup that is:

  • Blackcurrant-forward — A bold, tart berry note that's almost wine-like
  • Citrus acidity — Bright, clean malic acidity reminiscent of fresh apples
  • Tomato-like savory notes — A depth that adds complexity and body
  • Brown sugar sweetness — Balanced finish with lingering caramel undertones

"At Ruwawa Farm, our SL28 grows at 1,800 meters, where cool nights and volcanic soil create conditions that amplify every characteristic this variety was born to express."

Why Kenyan SL28 Commands Premium Prices

You may have noticed that Kenyan SL28 often costs more than other African coffees. Here's why:

Rugged Terrain

Steep hillsides make mechanical harvesting impossible. Every cherry is hand-picked at peak ripeness.

Labor Intensive

Multiple passes through the same trees are needed to pick only the ripest cherries.

Genetic Purity

Authentic SL28 requires careful seed selection and grafting to maintain variety integrity.

Competition

Top specialty coffee buyers compete fiercely for the best Kenyan lots, driving up prices.

How to Brew the Best SL28

To fully appreciate SL28's complex flavor profile, we recommend these brewing methods:

1

Pour Over (V60/Chemex)

Highlight the tea-like body and complex aromatics. Use 1:16 ratio, 92°C water, 3-4 minute brew time.

2

AeroPress

Maximize clarity while preserving sweetness. Try inverted method with 85°C water for a clean, juicy cup.

3

French Press

If you prefer full body and oilier texture. Use coarse grind, 4-minute steep.
